Drinking coffee is associated with a lower risk of death, researchers said

The survey’s author, Dr. Dan Liu, said, “Our study concluded that moderate-drinking coffee sweetened with sugar every day protected adults from death from any cause by about 30% over a seven-year period compared to people who did not drink coffee.”

According to a press release, researchers at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, reported that previous studies have found a link between coffee consumption and a lower mortality rate, but they did not distinguish between those who drink coffee without sugar and those who use sugar or artificial sweeteners in their beverages.
Study participants filled out the U.K. Biobank study health behavior questionnaire. To determine coffee consumption habits, investigators asked 171,000 participants without known heart disease or cancer several questions about diet and lifestyle.
After a 7-year follow-up period, the researchers found that those who drink any amount of unsweetened coffee are 16 to 21 percent less likely to die than those who do not drink coffee. In the study, participants who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee per day with an average of one teaspoon of sugar per cup had a 29 percent to 31 percent lower death rate than those who did not drink coffee. The findings were inconclusive for participants who used artificial sweeteners.
While most coffee drinkers may not have to eliminate the beverage from their diet based on the study’s findings, they should be cautious when it comes to specialty coffees with higher calorie counts.
According to a press release from the researchers, the amount of sugar per cup of coffee included in the study analysis is less than that found in popular specialty drinks at chain cafés, which makes the comparison to non-coffee drinkers more difficult.
